Since autumn 2009, Eurest Services Sweden has a three year-action plan for reducing the environmental impact in terms of energy, waste, water, transports and packaging. The main focus is on using the existing resources in a responsible way, in this way creating opportunities for a more sustainable development. In this work we have involved our staff as well as our partner organizations and clients.
New steps towards sustainable business. During 2010 we reduced our environmental impact, taking new steps towards a more sustainable business
• We joined Stockholm Climate Pact – a cooperation between the City of Stockholm and its business community. In September we were invited to the annual Climate Pact Conference, where we gave a presentation on “Reducing Carbon Footprint though Efficient Waste Management”.
• We participated in WWF’s Earth Hour, the world’s biggest manifestation for the climate – we “switched off the lights” for six months, while working with energy management, finding sustainable solutions concerning energy usage in our company.
• We joined “Gröna Gaffeln” the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s campaign for reducing food’s environmental impact. We also joined the Fairtrade focus weeks in October 2010.
• More than half of our purchases of fish are MSC-labeled.
• More than half of our purchases of coffee are KRAV-labeled (KRAV is the key label in the organic food market in Sweden).
• 65% of our company cars are more environmentally friendly.
• 66% of the chemical cleaning products we use are more environmentally friendly.
• Food waste has been reduced by 25% per meal between November 2009 and April 2010. We continue measuring the food waste and our main objective is that all units should leave the organic waste to local authorities for biological treatment to biogas and compost soil (if this is possible in the municipality). Our actions for waste reduction were rewarded with a European award in the EU-project “European Week for Waste Reduction”.
• A transport coordination project has been launched, expecting to reduce our transport deliveries by 35-40%.
• A project has been launched to promote climate friendly travel and physical activity. Between April and October 2010 we managed to save approximately 10 tons of carbon dioxide - our staff choose to walk, take the bike or the bus to and from work. Focus was on raising awareness among our staff about the negative impact of high energy consumption, showing how each of us can reduce energy consumption and start a healthier lifestyle by small every day changes.
• We have achieved bronze level in Compass Groups’ Recommended Environmental Guidelines.
• Our site in the southern part of Sweden, Medirest Lund, renewed their certification in ISO 14001.
We continue our focused work creating opportunities for a more sustainable development and as we want to go even greener we have started the work to certify our operations in the rest of the country in ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
